AARF News June 24, 2008

Hello AARF Members and Supporters!

ADOPTION NEWS:
We have good news - Lisa the dog that had been surrendered to AARF because she was chasing cats has found a forever home!

We still have several kittens that need good loving homes and hope that you will tell everyone you know about the first ever AARF Shelter Adoption Day this Thursday June 27th from 3 - 6 PM at the AARF Shelter located at Morlens Veterinary Hospital on Long Path Road near the Sandy Hill Roundabout.

The adoption fee of $20 US includes the animals first set of vaccinations & worming, as well as the pet's spay/neuter surgery when the animal is around 6 months old.

Light Refreshments will be served.

VOLUNTEERS STILL WANTED & NEEDED:
Don't forget we always need volunteers to help out at the shelter and adoption days so if you are willing to give a little of your spare time to help the animals, please contact Sally at baumwell@anguillanet.com or respond to this email at the aarfinfo@aarf.ai address. As many are off island on vacation this time of the year we are really in need of assistance!

DISTEMPER /PARVO OUTBREAK:
Is you dog/puppy up to date on his vaccinations? There have been several fatal cases of distemper and parvo in unvaccinated dogs on the island. If your dog is due or past due for his yearly vaccinations , or has not completed his puppy shots please call Morlens at 497-4600 to make an appointment for your dog ASAP.

HURRICANE TIPS:
Are you prepared for the 2008 hurricane season? Did you remember to include your pet /animals in your plans?

The key to survival during a disaster for you and your animals is to be as prepared as possible before the storm hits. Take the time to create a plan and assemble an emergency kit for your family including your pets. By taking these steps now, you will greatly increase your pet’s chances of survival.

AARF advises all pet owners to have a kit for their pet, which should include:

* Supply of food for 7 days in an airtight, water proof container
* Drinking water for 7 days
* Bowls for food and water
* Vaccination records and physical description or picture of each pet
* For dogs include--leash, collar and a sturdy carrier
* For cats include--litter and litter box and a sturdy carrier

AARF also advises:

* Keep your animals with you; if you must leave an animal outside, do not leave him tethered.
* Place the pet emergency supply kit by the door so it is ready to go if you need to evacuate quickly.
* Make sure your pet has visible identification on right now.
* Talk with a trusted neighbor who can care for your pets if you are away

AARF also recommends the following tips for owners of livestock animals including goats, cows, chickens and pigs:

* Livestock especially goats should not be tied during storms as it prevents them from seeking shelter from high water and blowing debris.
* Ensure that poultry have access to high areas in which to perch, if they are in a flood-prone area, as well as to food and clean water.
* Remove all barbed wire, and consider rerouting permanent fencing so that animals may move to high ground in a flood and to low-lying areas during high winds.
* Obtain enough large containers to water your animals for at least a week as water supplies are often contaminated during a disaster.
* Secure or remove anything that could become blowing debris, if you have boats, feed troughs, or other large containers, fill them with water before the hurricane. This prevents them from blowing around and also gives you an additional supply of water.
* The leading causes of death of large animals in hurricanes and similar events are collapsed barns, dehydration, electrocution, and accidents resulting from fencing failure. If you own farm animals, you should take precautions to protect them from these hazards.

Thank you,
Suzie

Aarfupdate-Lisa needs a home ASAP

Hi Everyone,
Lisa has been at the AARF Shelter for almost 2 weeks and we desperately need to find a forever home for her. She is a wonderful dog! A typical 10-month old she is full of energy & loves human companionship, is calm and cuddly, waiting for pets and hugs and nice words and walks! She is good on a leash & house trained and has never had an accident in her crate. She is a very special puppy and we are hoping that you or someone you know would give her a chance at a forever home. She was relinquished to the shelter because she chased the cats she lived with, so a cat-free house would be best.
The adoption fee of US$20 includes her first set of vaccinations as well as her spay surgery.
Please call the shelter ASAP at 476-2731 or Morlens at 497-4600 or reply to this email at aarfinfo@aarf.ai if you are interested in meeting and possibly adopting Lisa.
We also have several kittens that need homes so if you are looking for a kitten please give us a call! I have attached two of our candidates for adoption and will send out pictures of the others later today.
Since we no longer have an adoption chairman or adoption days we are depending on those interested in adopting to come to the AARF Shelter which is located at Morlens Veterinary Hospital at Sandy Hill. Please let your friends know that the shelter is now open Monday - Saturday from 9 - 1.
Thank you
Suzie
